OLNA Online

Phil has been involved in the teaching profession for more than forty years. His major interests are mathematics and maths pedagogy, but he has taught in a variety of roles across all year levels and in a variety of settings, both regional and metropolitan.
In recent years, Phil has shown special dedication in exploring techniques of engaging lower ability students. He is a leader in devising and formulating specialised mathematics programs, and his capacity to design and deliver best practice for mathematics teaching has been widely recognised. He has continued to refine these programs across the past twenty years.
As a Next Learning consultant, Phil is committed to the delivery of real and meaningful benefits to both students and teaching staff.

After working as a physical education specialist for the first ten years of his career, Phil shifted his focus to his primary passion, mathematics. It was in this area that Phil saw a great need for new and innovative approaches. In particular, he wanted to explore ways of helping students who were difficult to engage or of low ability in understanding and applying essential numeracy skills. As a result, he wrote and developed numerous maths programs targeting these students.
With the School Curriculum and Standards Authority’s introduction of online literacy and numeracy testing in 2015, Phil saw a need to assist schools and their students through a computer-based, scaffolded learning tool. To that end, OLNAWA (Online Literacy and Numeracy Assessment Western Australia) was created for the purpose of helping reach standards that will see them cope with life after school. In most learning, scaffolding and teacher differentiation go hand in hand. The OLNAWA program aims to offer a whole task approach and an optimal level of support. The program is mobile friendly and can be used on any device at any time.
