Dr Jim Mullaney

Professional Learning Consultant

Jim has been involved in education since the age of 5. He has taught in primary, secondary and tertiary institutions and has teaching experience across several learning areas and all phases of development. Jim has taught students from Pre-Primary to PhD level and has also been involved in adult education. For the past twenty years, Jim has focussed on constructing and delivering Professional Learning opportunities for Academics and Teachers, specifically around technology-enhanced pedagogy.

Jim has a particular interest in Creative Technologies, using ICT tools to create rather than just consume. He loves exploring the potential of cloud-based collaboration tools like Office 365 and Google’s productivity suite and looking at how they can be used to transform the education landscape.

He is a noted conference workshop developer and is in demand as a Keynote Speaker.

Jim has been working with in-service and pre-service teachers for more than twenty years. As a Learning Technologies Consultant, Jim has delivered hundreds of workshops to thousands of teachers across the world. Jim understands the importance of having a solid digital pedagogy when bringing ICT into the classroom and his workshops are practical, “hands-on minds-on” sessions with immediate relevance to contemporary learning.

Jim has recently been working in a series of University leadership roles in Western Australia and Cambridge, UK, with a specific responsibility for technology integration. His most recent position was as Academic Lead for Digital Pedagogies in the School of Education at Curtin University.

  • Digital Pedagogies
  • School Strategy Development
  • Classroom Transformation
  • Mapping Digital Tools to Curriculum
  • Presentations and Keynotes

Jim prefers to develop resources and workshops in consultation with schools, but has in the past developed and run sessions on the following;

  • Using cloud-based tools to transform learning. Looking at tools from vendors like Microsoft and Google and how they can be used to enhance collaboration and creativity.
  • Creative Technologies. Using freely available tools and apps to create digital artefacts of value and beauty – music, art, multimedia.
  • Developing a personal digital pedagogy. Using ICT tools comes with its own set of restrictions and limitations. How can you develop your own digital pedagogy to ensure the outcomes are better and more relevant in the 21st Century.
  • Robotics & Coding. Find out why everyone is talking about the power of coding and how it can be applied to robotics, computation and algorithmic thinking.
  • Looking for someone to challenge and stimulate discussion. Having Jim as a Keynote speaker or plenary at your next Professional Learning event will lead to your staff understanding the power and potential of digital tools in the education landscape.

Jim understands the complexities of running a school and the importance of having living, dynamic strategic documentation, particularly around digital capabilities. He has an experienced eye for detail and a keen understanding of how the elements of such a strategy need to fit together. His experience enables him to put the right questions to the right people in order to develop a holistic view of the school’s potential, where the possible pain-points might be and how to mitigate their effects.
